02 Aug Why You Need to Shift From Getting to Giving
In business, you’re constantly evolving to try to determine what products and services to offer your customers to meet their needs. We ask ourselves questions like…
- What need do our customers have?
- What products or services will they want to buy?
- What price are they willing to pay?
- What features do we need to offer?
In other words, as a business owner, you’re actively searching for ways to get your customers to buy more, to pay more, or to otherwise grow your business. This is what I refer to as the “get” mindset, characterized by always thinking, “what can you do now to get more later?”
Though this is a productive approach to take to start your business, it is equally important to also find ways to give back to your customers and your overall industry or local community. Whether you offer free giveaways to loyal customers, volunteer to support a cause, or host other charitable events – these can all be effective ways to grow your business with a “give” mindset.
I take the “give” approach with my time and business as often as I can. From speaking at events for free to working closely with start-ups to help them grow their revenue to a million dollars, the emotional and mental benefits I gain from giving back to the business community is invaluable.
Not to mention, the more you do for others, the more inherently that will be done for you. And, with many customers looking for companies that support social and environmental causes, you could inadvertently attract more customers this way than with traditional marketing.
So, this week I challenge you to make a list of ways that you can shift from a “get” mindset to a “give” mindset. What causes, passions, or interests do you have? Start there and identify at least one thing you can do this month to give back.
